    Team TrueSkill Ratings

There will be a longer, more complete blog post coming on the Planet Kubb blog about this soon. But, here is a sneak peek on the pitch.

The Planet Kubb wiki now has 1,091 tournament matches in it and 357 teams. Holy crap right? Yeah. Special hat tip to @dobbie,  @chrishodges and @garrick for doing a ton of work entering match information.

Well, there is more. I wrote a bot that walks through every match in date order (see the code) and calculates a TrueSkill rating (TrueSkill was developed by Microsoft for Xbox Live, it’s like a modern version of ELO rating system). Each team starts with a μ score of 25.

So, who is the top ranked team in Planet Kubb? They have a μ score of 42.948. Hint: It’s not the Kubbchucks, we have a score of 28.205.

See the top 50 active teams scores.

Also, if you haven’t checked out the event pages, club pages and team pages in a while. You should, they are much better. Like I said, more to come, this is a sneak peek.

Disclaimer: Both TrueSkill and ELO scores are based on a series of games played and the various skill levels of those matches. The TrueSkill value is recalculated weekly. As more matches from the past are added, these values will update and change to reflect the additional data. So, beware that these are dynamic and updating values.

Oh, and if you haven’t tried the Group X-Ray, give it a try. You’ll want to go here immediately when tournament groups are declared in the future. :-)

Yeah, it was a fun read, even after the fact. Great use of “The Pitch”. We’re practicing for in Mpls today for this “outsider” tournament next weekend. I’ll try and put together a blog post before and after about it. I’m pretty excited about it.

Very intrigued. Hopefully you can get some of them interested in coming to EC. Less than 2 hours down the I-94 Kubbidor.

I agree with Dobs, if we can swing it, we should shoot for a monthly event.

  • Dobbie 12:37 am on February 17, 2013 Permalink

This should be a scheduled event every month or so. Kubb anonymous.

Beaming with excitement at the conversation that I wasn’t able to be part of earlier tonight. How great!

  • Eric Anderson 8:30 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

This was a blast. We should do it more often.

All right everyone. I need to get a few things done this evening. Have a great night.

@swedenssons – you spent the Loppet observing teams, any interesting new game play you witnessed?

Tossing at the king to lose on purpose to start game two when time limits are short.
The rescue play I saw and how it unfolded.
A lot of young guys with the look in their eyes that they could get into the sport part of it.

Will the finals be webcast live again?

    • Eric Anderson 8:09 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

We are hoping to, and have a wider lens/camera to get the whole pitch. It was a little last minute last year, but we think we are the only Championship doing it. VM NEEDS TO DO IT.

  • Chris Hodges 7:52 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Are there any updates at all to the tournament format this year?

    • Eric Anderson 7:58 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

      Great question.

    • Eric Anderson 7:59 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Format will stay the same. If we get to 96 teams, we have already done the bracket, the top 32 teams will get a bye. 24 group winners and 6 #2s. 64 will play in.

The Kubbchucks are planning on back-to-back games again this year. Though instead of just 1 day, we’re hoping for 2 days of continuous play :)

        • Eric Anderson 8:10 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

We say why not the Kubbchucks on Sunday. The red and white kubbs will be waiting for you….

        • Jamie Thingelstad 10:30 am on February 17, 2013 Permalink

No back-to-back this year Garrick. We are going to shut down the opposite side of the pitch so fast they’ll be wondering when the game even started! :-)

Is there any rhyme or reason to which 6 groups will pass on their #2? Seems like it might be quite an advantage to be in one of those…

        • Eric Anderson 8:03 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Teams in the 2012 1-4 finishers and then 2 from the T5s. The other two will play 4s. Perhaps some would want to keep playing. It will be random, unless we only get six return, etc.

  • Eric Anderson 7:27 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Let’s get this party started. We will be here until 8pm. Time to talk Kubb and US Championship.

Short notice is probably not the best, but I figured I would give it a try.

Just got an email asking who we thought the favorite is for 2013. Great question. We would say both Team Knockerheads and Kubbsicles are even right now. Can either be beat? Sure, but you will have to bring you A+ game and hope for a slip from them. TK at the Loppet was overly impressive at 8 meters and Josh probably still has the advantage on Mark for the inkastare position. That being said, the young kids get it done and have no fear, not saying TK does. If they are both in the Final again, we would not be surprised and would enjoy the show.

    • Eric Anderson 7:52 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Got another question about sleepers. Remember, Leinenkubbels were the only team to beat Kubbsicles last year. They finished 3rd, and we think some teams might think that was a fluke. We don’t. Solid team with very underrated inkastare. Also, Dark Side of the Kubb seems to be upcoming along

      • Eric Anderson 7:55 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

With kubbilicious Maximus and Von trappe family slingers. We say them, as we have played against them since the 2012 Championship and have seen them take some good teams far in a match. We would love to see another top Des Moines team or Twin Cities team come up as well. Heck, we would love to see more teams from all the clubs lie Appleton, Madison, etc.

      • Eric Anderson 7:56 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Then, we think Goofy Kubbers could make a very deep run this year. In one year, their inkastare Evan Fitzgerald has become what we think is a top 10, if not 5 or 6 in the country.

Got an over/under on how many of last year’s quarter finalists will be playing on Sunday this year?

        We will say five.

4.5 should make an interesting Vegas line.

      • Eric Anderson 8:04 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

We do think it is going to get a lot harder to get to Sunday. The average teams are getting better and the good teams, some are getting really good.

Do you want to name them?

        • Chris Hodges 8:07 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Not until I see the groups & brackets!!!

Come on Mr. Hodges, Knockerheads, Kubbsicles, Tad Kubbler, I know you have those three, who are your two or more?

        • Garrick 8:14 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

          Kubb Snipers & Ringers?

        • Eric Anderson 8:15 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Kubb Snipers did not make it last year. T9.

        • Garrick 8:15 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

          @swedenssons – thanks, I didn’t remember.

        • Chris Hodges 8:17 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Kubb Snipers will have an uphill battle without the seeding, but I think they will make it this year. Any team Scott Forster drills for, and Leinies.

        • Chris Hodges 8:19 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

I think the Wolfpack has the talent to make it back too. How long has it been since they didn’t at least make the quarters?

        • Eric Anderson 8:21 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

We think that a lot of people will realize this year that a top 16 seed and top 8 even more so is vital. We love this game!!

        • bricker 8:21 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Hey Guys: I’d like to see the Kubb Snipers in–mostly because of my personal history with them.

        • Chris Hodges 8:22 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

But obviously I can’t pick all of these teams if they will be meeting each other late Saturday! Can’t wait until the live draw – Kubbnation chatter goes off the charts as soon as the groups drop.

        • bricker 8:23 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

But I also think that the game has enough room for a dark horse, a freak, an accident…skill is critical but there is more than just skill happening. With so many good teams it comes down to a few tosses. Anything can happen.

        • Eric Anderson 8:27 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

Wolfpack 2010 didn’t make it. Hard not to see five make it back. Love to see a new team come from far away make a run to Sunday. That would be awesome.

Throw a baton…I will have to wait awhile to do that.

So our Chaska teams hit some walls this past weekend. THE RINGERS being one of those walls. Had our opportunities to crash through, but couldn’t do it. X Kubbed did well and were taken out by Sukface. Relentless Kastpinners…couldn’t get the ball rolling but ended up 2nd in consolation.

Were we the only club with 3 teams?

I handed out a lot of 1page Kubb rules papers. Probably could have handed more out.

Sold 9 sets. 2-4 of those to random people walking by.

Had a great time, but too busy to get autographs on my cards I had made.

There were at least 3 Teams that MN Kubb (which is more like Mpls Kubb) could have claimed as it’s own. I’m really looking forward to the Planet Kubb club competition at nationals this summer, although we wouldn’t have been that competitive last weekend.

    • Chris Hodges 9:00 am on February 8, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

The Kastpinners were in a brutal group. Pitch Slap is a couple of solid players (ranked 6 & 7 in our ladder currently) and they went 0-3 for a 4th seed. Brutal Kubb right out of the gate on those pitches…

    • swedenssons 7:55 pm on February 9, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Berserker Kubb had five teams. The Ringers, Team Kubboom, Kubb de Grace, The 3 Kubbateers (T3K), and Hangin’ With Mr. Kubber.

It was awesome seeing so many people want to buy sets. I am hoping you are going to sit out the US Championship or have someone be at a table full-time. Tough to do both. Aaron tried it in 2011 and he will admit it really impacted his game…and probably could have sold more sets.

    • swedenssons 7:57 pm on February 9, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Looking back now, I would have liked to see Relentless Kastpinnar put some kubbs back up after the more than a few helicopters from the team they lost to in the group play, I think it was.
