Wrapping up. Went from promotions and marketing to how we get a camera positioning directly over the king to the final game. Perhaps a quad copter…

I assume all that are online but not participating are just stealing all our great ideas, right?

Thoughts on T-3. No 3rd place game. What do you think?

    • ringer 7:23 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I think we need a third place..

    • Eric Anderson 7:35 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

If I come from far away and am fortunate enough to make it to semifinals. I like two more matches. Tough to play for third sometimes, but it is an opportunity to play Kubb.

Discussing trophies. Any thoughts out there on prior years’ trophies.

What if your trophy was the KING you killed to win it? A little battle-scar in the king to take home. Thoughts?

Another Silent Auction this year. What things do travelers look for?

    • Dobbie 7:00 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

That was a question? Is there interest in Silent Auction for travelers? Most of our winners were local and in the DMK club.

      • Eric Anderson 7:05 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

From experience, the Rockford silent auction slowed down enough to stop, same as EC. I loved the Scandinavian shop basket before. I would go in on that again. Perhaps local beer?

End of year, folks might be looking to get a new tournament set. Not sure if you are using JP or OTG, but people might start bidding each other up.

        • Dobbie 7:13 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

Old Time Games will be used for the field. New OTG sets with laser wood-burned JP kings will be used for the elite 8 in front of the bleachers.

        • Dobbie 7:15 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

we will have sets in the auction. Perhaps we scale the auction back and only have the best selling items. Mmmmmm…….local beer.

Chocolate shop in town? How about a 5×7 or something for the players on a team from Becca of your team like last year or a picture of your team playing. She takes great pictures, and I would love a 5×7 of the team I travel down there with.

        • Dobbie 7:28 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

          5×7 is a good idea.

        • Eric Anderson 7:35 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

          I would bid for it.

If it raises needed funds and/or spreads goodwill and unity, just do it.. I also know they can be a lot of work ..

Decision point: putting 8 meters between baselines, and 4 meters between sidelines.

    • Eric Anderson 6:50 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Can we chime in hear? Would like the more room between baselines, for what it is worth.

      • Dobbie 6:52 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Madison had 8 meters. It seemed good. What was US Nats last year?

        • Eric Anderson 6:55 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

I think we had 12. More of a walking lane, since we had to go so long rows of pitches.

More meant more than last year.

        • Dobbie 6:53 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

Last year we had 4 meters. We are moving to 8.

Hey guys. I usually don’t get the chance to jump in on this kind of thing live, but I’m happy to be here and nerd-out on kubb a bit!

Having only been to one DMK tournament, the spacing seems less relevant because there aren’t groups. One thing I love about the DMK format is that pitches 1-16 are essentially a realtime scoreboard. Pitch #1 is the top two teams and so on. If space changes between pitches for other tournaments, I hope the two pitches for each group stay close together so the 4 teams can feel like they’re a group.

  • Dobbie 6:41 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

Initially we were going to cap at 40 teams (I know that is positive thinking), but we decided we can go more.

I think you should relocate the Klassic to Trumansburg NY. Just Saying

What happens if you get a lot more teams? Does that change the number of games needed to determine top eight?

      • Dobbie 6:34 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Positive that our system will find the right top 8 in 6 rounds. In our testing, we can theoretically support 128 teams….that is when you start finding little variance between 6 and 9.

        • Eric Anderson 6:38 pm on June 5, 2013 Permalink

          Wow. That is impressive.

    Team TrueSkill Ratings

There will be a longer, more complete blog post coming on the Planet Kubb blog about this soon. But, here is a sneak peek on the pitch.

The Planet Kubb wiki now has 1,091 tournament matches in it and 357 teams. Holy crap right? Yeah. Special hat tip to @dobbie,  @chrishodges and @garrick for doing a ton of work entering match information.

Well, there is more. I wrote a bot that walks through every match in date order (see the code) and calculates a TrueSkill rating (TrueSkill was developed by Microsoft for Xbox Live, it’s like a modern version of ELO rating system). Each team starts with a μ score of 25.

So, who is the top ranked team in Planet Kubb? They have a μ score of 42.948. Hint: It’s not the Kubbchucks, we have a score of 28.205.

See the top 50 active teams scores.

Also, if you haven’t checked out the event pages, club pages and team pages in a while. You should, they are much better. Like I said, more to come, this is a sneak peek.

Disclaimer: Both TrueSkill and ELO scores are based on a series of games played and the various skill levels of those matches. The TrueSkill value is recalculated weekly. As more matches from the past are added, these values will update and change to reflect the additional data. So, beware that these are dynamic and updating values.

Oh, and if you haven’t tried the Group X-Ray, give it a try. You’ll want to go here immediately when tournament groups are declared in the future. :-)

Yeah, it was a fun read, even after the fact. Great use of “The Pitch”. We’re practicing for in Mpls today for this “outsider” tournament next weekend. I’ll try and put together a blog post before and after about it. I’m pretty excited about it.

Very intrigued. Hopefully you can get some of them interested in coming to EC. Less than 2 hours down the I-94 Kubbidor.

I agree with Dobs, if we can swing it, we should shoot for a monthly event.

  • Dobbie 12:37 am on February 17, 2013 Permalink

This should be a scheduled event every month or so. Kubb anonymous.

Beaming with excitement at the conversation that I wasn’t able to be part of earlier tonight. How great!

  • Eric Anderson 8:30 pm on February 16, 2013 Permalink

This was a blast. We should do it more often.
